“Speak Hindi or Leave?” — What If a Marathi Person Said That to You in Maharashtra?
The Marathi-Hindi debate isn’t just about language anymore—it’s about respect, dignity, and the slow erasure of a native identity.
📍 The Real Frustration of Being a Marathi in Maharashtra
I’m a Marathi-speaking person, born and raised in Maharashtra. I’m proud of my language and culture. But today, I feel like a guest in my own land.
- I condemn violence.
- But I won’t stay silent when my language is mocked or ignored in my own state.
🔥 1. Everyday Hypocrisy We See
- Try speaking Marathi to a cab driver or security guard — they roll their eyes.
- Ask for a Marathi song in a lounge — they laugh.
- Watch the news about Mumbai — it’s always in Hindi, even when it’s about Marathi issues.
If a Tamil speaker expects respect in Tamil Nadu, and a Bengali in West Bengal—why not a Marathi speaker in Maharashtra?
💢 2. Real Incidents That Triggered Us
- June 2025: A Mira Road shopkeeper was slapped by MNS workers for not speaking Marathi. Wrong? Yes. But the disrespect didn’t begin there.
- Ola driver in Dadar was insulted for insisting on Marathi.
- Public spaces like railway counters, malls, restaurants often refuse to acknowledge Marathi-speaking citizens.
“Speak Hindi or English if you want service.”
— That’s what many of us are told in our own land.
🤔 3. Respect Doesn’t Mean Dominance
We’re not asking for “Marathi-only” rules. We’re asking for balance.
- Include Marathi in signs, service boards, and announcements.
- Play Marathi songs alongside Hindi and English in public spaces.
- Don’t shame a person for speaking their mother tongue. Ever.
📢 4. The Political Hypocrisy
- The government tried pushing Hindi from Class 1. Backlash forced them to reverse it.
- Politicians use Marathi in rallies, then forget it in policies.
- News anchors call defending Marathi “regionalism”—but ignore the systemic disrespect that caused it.
🧠 Final Thought: Speak With Respect or Don’t Expect It
I’ll respect Hindi. I’ll speak English when needed. But if I, as a Marathi person, speak my language and you refuse to even acknowledge it—that’s not unity. That’s disrespect.
“If you live in Maharashtra, don’t just take from it. Learn to honor its soul—Marathi.”
